FAMILY READ
Program Funders
Family Read is both a written curriculum
and a learned approach to reading as a family activity. Parents
with young children attend adults-only classes led by family resource
center
staff,
adult basic education teachers, ESL instructors, and others who
have been certified to teach the program through CHC-funded training
institutes.
Family Read uses the power of sharing stories within the family
setting to encourage parents to use multicultural children’s literature
as a springboard for meaningful conversations with their children. Family
Read classes
are led by trained discussion leaders and give parents a chance to develop
reading, discussion, listening, and parenting skills while practicing them
at home with their children.
The program features a time-tested, written curriculum handbook based on 31 multicultural children's books. Family Read is organized around dozens of empowering themes, such as “Expressing Needs and Feelings,” “Establishing Independence,” “Understanding What Families Value,” and Self-Possibilities and blends old favorites, like Where the Wild Things Are with dozens of newer children’s titles, such as Follow the Drinking Gourd and Amelia’s Road.
The Family Read development model is based on these principles:
Learner-centered instruction: the context of the students' lives determines the content;
Holistic approach: the class incorporates several language skills-reading, writing, speaking, and listening;
Non-deficit perspective: learning is based on the strengths the participant already has instead of focusing on weaknesses;
Social network: the class provides a vehicle for social support of learning.
