Digital History: A Guide to Gathering, Preserving, and Presenting the Past on the Web

Cohen and Rosenzweig, two historians from George Mason University's Center for History and New Media, have created an excellent primer for going online. Digital History covers all the basics--how the web works, how to design a website, how to build an audience, and how to add interactivity to your site. But this isn't your standard tech book. This tech book is for the history community. Chapters examine digitizing historical documents, maximizing the accessibility of online collections, addressing copyright law and intellectual property issues, and using the Internet to collect accounts of and artifacts from the recent past. All discussions of the internet age rapidly and Cohen and Rosenzweig's 2006 book does not consider the potential value of social networking sites such as Facebook and Flickr. To stay on the cutting edge of digital developments, try Cohen's blog and podcast (at www.dancohen.org).
